Summer heat

summer heat 4

It’s been very hot today. 41°C here in Mount Evelyn is decidedly uncomfortable. Fortunately we humans can disappear into our air conditioned homes and chill out until the heat subsides.

Our wildlife are not so fortunate.
They have nowhere cool to hide, so it is very important that we provide them with some relief.
Leave shallow dishes with cool water in a shady spot for our birds and animals to drink and bathe and cool down.
If you see a bird or animal looking distressed, perhaps you could put on a gentle sprinkler to spray on their fur or feathers to cool them down. This will make an enormous difference to helping them to survive the heat.

If they appear distressed, don’t handle them except in extreme circumstances, as this will only distress them more.
If you are concerned contact your local Vet or Wildlife Carer who will advise you as to the best way to help these precious native creatures. This service is usually free of charge.

You can also contact Healesville Sanctuary or Melbourne Zoo for help.
